This work discusses the ways that Amazon forest was produced in the early 20th century by the travel lite rature of Euclides da Cunha. The article focuses, mostly, on the set of motivations of Euclidean forest travel. It is argued that at that time, was settled a need to include the Amazon forest in the world as a disenchanted environment, chaotic, barbarian and savage. It was necessary, however, to delete or “register cleaner”, the travel literature of the 19th century that pointed the forest as an idyllic, tranquil and charming place. Thus, one of the intentions of the article is to point out a discontinuity between 19th century’s travel literature (especially the one that suffered strong contamination of the “aesthetics of the sublime”) and the literature on the Amazon that Euclides da Cunha opens to the ways of seeing the forest. The texts of Euclides da Cunha on Amazon are seen in this article as pedagogical, for teaching us how, in the early 20th century, the forest was configured and how the subjects who lived there were constituted and positioned, for example, related to race. With inspiration in cultural studies that assume post-modern perspectives, it seeks to understand the meanings attributed to the forest and also, to the processes that place, in specific ways, the subjects who inhabit there as a result of settings woven history and culture.en
