Starting from the reality found in some communities of the Mbyá-Guarani etnia in Rio Grande do Sul, the relationship among the autochthonous constructions, the sustainability and the external interventions was approached. In those places, according to the region, different constructive solutions have been developed using the materials available and respecting the cultural precepts. However, there are difficulties to access the necessary natural resources used in the constructions. To solve the lack of homes problem, the State Government has been accomplishing habitational interventions using the participative social design method. However, the Mbyá-Guarani continue building their traditional houses next to the interventions. This essay has as main objective to analyze comparatively the different habitational typologies (the autochthonous and the ones originating from external intervention), observed in eight Mbyá-Guarani communities visited in this state. The intermediate objectives looked for were to characterize the current habitational situation and self-builted typologies observed in the communities; identify the perception of the Mbyá-Guarani about the autochthonous typologies, approaching cultural aspects, comfort, materials and constructive process; apprehend the vision of sustainability of the Mbyá-Guarani, aiming to analyze, adding the theoretical references, the relationship between sustainability and the autochthonous constructions; and to identify the perception of the Mbyá-Guarani and nonindigenous assistants about the external interventions. To reach such objectives, the fieldwork collection of data involved observation, interviews and surveys. At the end, it is considered that the external interventions, in spite of being necessary, alter the users' behavior, leading to the loss of autonomy. On the other hand, the autochthonous constructions strengthen the nhande rekó (Mbyá-Guarani way of life). However, measures are necessary to guarantee the etno-sustainability, seeking to make possible the continuity of those constructions. The recognition that the autochthonous solutions meet the cultural needs - being the Mbyá-Guarani the largest experts on the techniques, materials and symbolic importance of their houses - allow the public policies to assist with larger efficiency those communities' demands. This is an unpublished research in this area of the country and in this research nucleus, and it comes to fullfill one knowledge gap, offering subsidies for future interventions in the indigenous communities.en
