The present dissertation deals with a theoretical/experimental study including nanobubbles properties and interface characteristics, researching the generation mechanisms and its applications in flotation of quartz particles and colloidal precipitates, as mineral particles and aquo pollutants model. The nanobubbles generation was conducted by depressurization of dissolved air in water, proving a finding of the nanobubbles fraction (120 - 720 nm), aside from microbubbles (40 - 100 m) in this technique that gave rise to dissolved air flotation (DAF). The nanobubbles interfacial properties study (zeta potential and size) were carried as a function of medium pH, using NaCl as a support eletrolyte, and in the presence of the anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate – SDS) and cationic (Alquil methyl ether monoamine - Flotigam EDA 3B). The characterization results showed that both size and zeta potential depends of the medium pH. The bigger size of the nanobubbles was found next to the isoelectric point (iep = 4.5), where its practically neutral (+ 5 mV). In opposite, for higher density nanobubbles charge, smaller will be the sizes, mostly in acid pH´s (pH = 2.0; size = 120 nm). Similarly, in alkaline medium (pH 10), it was observed a significant increase of the negative charge of nanobubbles (-59 mV). The flotation capacity of the nanobubbles (120 – 720 nm) isolated or mixed with coarse bubbles (0.4 – 0.8 mm) was evaluated for quartz particles in different size fractions. For these studies were employed different conditions and cells (setups), applied a modified Hallimond tube to coarse bubbles generation in the presence and the absence of nanobubbles. The results showed that flotation with single nanobubbles was not effective due to their very low lifting power. However, flotation recoveries with coarser and nanobubbles when compared to isolated coarse bubbles were 20-30 % higher only for the very fine quartz fractions (<37 μm) and did not affect the coarse particles (> 212 μm). The amine colloidal precipitates species were characterized by nephelometer turbidity, with the aim of investigating, the formation of these species as a function of amine concentration used. Hence, it was found that the amine colloids were formed in the alkaline medium (insolubilization) only from 10-3 mol. L-1, pH >10.5 and after 30 min. The size and zeta potential measured as a function of the medium pH showed that formed colloids had nanometrics sizes (120 – 350 nm), whereby these species grow to a maximum at the isolectric point (pH 11). Flotation studies of these colloids species was carried out in differents flotation systems and, in addition it was evaluated its flocculation effect before the flotation. The removal results of the precipitates species revealed that the isolated nanobubbles were highly efficient, reaching removal values close to 80%. In its turn, the microbubbles mixed with nanobubbles not showed significant values to the colloidal species removal. In addition, its flocculation before the flotation demonstrated that for lowest concentration of amine the flocks formation was efficient, increasing the removal of the colloidal species. On the other hand, for higher concentrations of amine the removal efficiency was decreased when compaired with the flotation without flocculation. Although, there is not specific legislation to control these amines pollutants, the removal results obtained (final residual concentrations of 10 ppm) showed efficient when compaired with the common concentrations found in mineral effluents (22 - 30 ppm). and zeta potential measured as a function of the medium pH showed that formed colloids had nanometrics sizes (120 – 350 nm), whereby these species grow to a maximum at the isolectric point (pH 11). Based on the results reported in the present work, the interfacial properties of the nanobubbles, as well the applications for mineral flotation of the particles and pollutants were better understood.en
