Due to the magnitude of forest loss, the Mata Atlântica strictu sensu in Rio Grande do Sul presents a forest cover composed of a mosaic of areas in different successional stages. To bird species, organisms that play a key role in forest succession, secondary forests are important sources of food, nidification and protection. The processes of forest succession and regeneration bring changes in species composition, which in turn cause structural alterations within the forest. These alterations may create distinct habitat conditions for animal populations, affecting the ecosystem functioning. In order to verify the effects of habitat modification in the ecosystem functionality, the present work uses data from surveys concerning vegetation structure and bird assemblage composition, aiming to verify the functional diversity within the bird assemblage (Rao quadratic entropy index) trough functional attributes. More complex habitat structures showed higher functional diversity regarding food guilds (P=0,025) and habitat use (P=0,063). Higher functional diversity indexes were found for morphologic features in areas with lower vegetation structural complexity (P=0,058). The results suggest that habitat structure influences the functional diversity of bird assemblages, with significant relationships between functional attributes and different habitat types.en
