The stainless steel, when exposed to high temperatures, is oxidized by a mixed diffusion mechanism of the chrome from the substrate and oxygen from the environment to which it was submitted. Fuel cell interconnectors and some vehicular exhaust system parts are examples of the use of ferritic stainless steel at high temperatures. The sharp oxidation harms the performance of these components and thus they require the development of a type of protection, which can be through a coating of the metal surface. Previous works from the LAPEC group have shown that coatings formed by perovskite oxides are not quite efficient, since perovskite degrades over time and it is not an effective barrier to the diffusion of chromium. However, it promotes a barrier effect to the migration of oxygen from the external environment into the substrate. On the other hand, spinel oxide coatings are an excellent barrier to the diffusion of chromium, although they are not a barrier to the diffusion of oxygen. In this context, in the present work double layer coatings were developed from ferritic stainless steel AISI 430 substrates at high temperatures. One layer is formed of a spinel oxide (NiFe2O4), referred to as coating 1, and it was obtained by performing an electroplating technique of a Fe-Ni alloy, followed by a thermal treatment at 800ºC. The other layer is formed by a perovskite oxide (La0,6Sr0,4CoO3), referred to as coating 2, obtained by spray pyrolysis, and followed by a thermal treatment at 800ºC. The thermal treatments were performed in different steps of the process in different deposition systems. One of the systems did not go through a thermal treatment (system 1), another system had the thermal treatment at the end of the deposition processes, with the layers being treated at the same time (system 2), and the third system had a thermal treatment after the deposition of the first layer (coating 1) by electroplating, and another thermal treatment after the deposition of the second layer (coating 2) by spray pyrolysis (system 3). In system 1, as expected, structures of spinel and perovskite oxides were not found. For the other systems, the coatings have shown these structures, although there has been the formation of chromium oxide. In regards to the morphology, the coatings treated following the system 2 have shown cracks in their surface, which could be associated to the TEC (Thermal Expansion Coefficient) difference amongst the involved elements. The system 3 coatings have shown a homogeneous surface, with small spots of precipitates, probably oxides.en
