Crônica e cidade: um retrato de Porto Alegre nas colunas de Jotabê no Correio do Povo (1955-1959)

Abstract

Este trabalho estuda seis crônicas escritas pelo jornalista porto-alegrense João Bergmann, mais conhecido como Jotabê, e publicados na coluna semanal O domingo é meu, mantida por ele entre os anos de 1955 e 1959 no jornal Correio do Povo. O objetivo central da pesquisa é entender a partir de quais elementos o cronista constrói uma perspectiva sobre a cidade de Porto Alegre. Para isso, recorremos à pesquisa bibliográfica, traçando as relações existentes entre jornalismo, crônica e cidade, e à análise de conteúdo, por meio da qual identificamos os principais elementos temáticos e expressivos que caracterizam as crônicas. Também realizamos uma pesquisa histórica para recuperarmos informações sobre a vida e a trajetória profissional do autor de nossas crônicas, já que não existe praticamente nenhum conjunto significativo de informações a seu respeito. Ao final, constatamos que Jotabê enxerga a cidade sob uma perspectiva da transformação, fruto da modernidade que se aproximava e se manifestava mais fortemente na capital. Também percebemos certo pessimismo no relato sobre a cidade, enfocando-a principalmente a partir dos seus problemas. Por fim, notamos que o humor, marca importante da escrita do cronista, contribui para disfarçar esse olhar negativo e funciona como uma ferramenta significativa para as críticas feitas pelo jornalista, sobretudo ao poder público.

This work studies six chronicles written by Porto Alegre journalist João Bergmann, better known as Jotabê, and published in the weekly column O domingo é meu, maintained by him between the years 1955 and 1959, in the newspaper Correio do Povo. The main objective of research is to understand which elements the chronicler uses to build a perspective over the city of Porto Alegre. For that, we turn to literature, tracing the relationship between journalism, chronic and city, and content analysis, through which we identify the major themes and the expressive elements that characterize chronic. We also do historical research to recover information about the life and career of the author of our chronicles, as there is virtually no significant body of information about him. At the end, we found that Jotabê sees the city from the perspective of the transformation, the result of modernity that was approaching and manifested itself most strongly in the capital. We also noticed a certain pessimism in the way he talks about the city, featuring it mainly from the problems. Finally, we note that the humor, major brand chronicler writing, contributes to disguise this negative look and acts as a significant tool for the criticisms made by the journalist, especially against the government.
