Pelo olhar de James Agee: o encontro de jornalismo e literatura no narrador de Elogiemos os Homens Ilustres

Abstract

Esta monografia tem como objetivo estudar o narrador de Elogiemos os homens ilustres, livro escrito por James Agee com o fotógrafo Walker Evans. Visa pensar suas estratégias e construções de efeitos de real e efeitos poéticos para entender de que forma relaciona características jornalísticas e literárias. Para isso, tem como método a análise interna da narrativa, ou narratologia, proposta por Reuter (2007), auxiliada por abordagens de Motta (2007) que intersectam o método com o jornalismo. O trabalho inicia com um panorama histórico que recupera a relação entre jornalismo e literatura nos Estados Unidos, especialmente no período de produção da obra. Segue com a recuperação de conceitos sobre jornalismo literário e livro-reportagem a partir de autores como Pena (2006) e Lima (1993; 1998). Faz um breve retrospecto sobre o realismo social e o romance moderno, movimentos literários que circundam e influenciam a obra. Em seguida, retoma vida e obra do autor James Agee e as referências que recaem sobre sua produção narrativa. Contextualiza a obra Elogiemos os homens ilustres, lançada em 1941 e produzida em 1936, que relata o período de oito semanas em que Agee e Evans conviveram com três famílias de meeiros no interior do Alabama, estado do sul dos Estados Unidos atingido pela Grande Depressão. Apresenta o método narratológico e enumera focos de análise no narrador. Demonstra quais estratégias são utilizadas pelo narrador para a construção de Homens ilustres a partir de três seções no livro, que servem de recorte para o gesto analítico. Por fim, conclui que o narrador combina recursos jornalísticos e literários para a produção de efeitos de real e efeitos poéticos: enquanto trabalho jornalístico, usa estratégias em busca da verossimilhança, com relatos narrativos e descritivos, e, ao trazer a história através de um narrador-personagem, faz uso de uma linguagem artística que traz fruição literária ao relato, o que caracteriza a obra como jornalismo com uma linguagem literária, posicionando-a entre jornalismo e literatura.

The main focus of this monograph is to study the narrator of Let us now praise famous men, book by James Agee with the photographer Walker Evans. It aims to think about his strategies and constructions of real effects and poetic effects, to understand how he relates journalistic and literary technical features. For this, it uses the internal analysis of narrative, or narratology, for method, proposed by Reuter (2007), aided by approaches from Motta (2007) that intersecting the method with journalism. The work begins with a historical overview retrieving the relation between journalism and literature in United States, especially in the production period of the book. It proceed with the recovery concepts about literary journalism and book-report from authors like Pena (2006) and Lima (1993; 1998). It makes a brief review about social realism and modern novel, literary movements that surround and influence the book. Then, recovery life and word from the author James Agee and the references that passed on his narrative production. It contextualizes the work Let us now praise famous men, launched in 1941and produced in 1936, which reports the eight-week period in which Agee and Evans lived with three sharecropper families in the country Alabama, southern US state hit by the Great Depression. It introduces the narratological method and lists analysis focuses on the narrator. It demonstrates what strategies are used by the narrator for the Famous men construction from three sections of the book that serves as a cutout for the analytical gesture. Finally, it concludes that the narrator combines journalistic and literary resources to produce real effects and poetic effects: while a journalistic work, it uses strategies for verisimilitude, with narrative and descriptive reports, and, bringing the story thought a narrator-character, it uses an artistic language that brings literary fruition to the report, which characterizes the work as journalism with a literary language, placing it between journalism and literature.
