This thesis presents a determination of the atomic arrangement of nanostructured surfaces by photoelectron diffraction, where the model catalysts Pt/Cr2O3/Ag(111) and Au/Cr2O3/Pd(111), and the surfaces Cr2O3(0001) and SrTiO3(111) were studied. The model catalyst was produced in situ by MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) deposition technique, and the characterizations were based on techniques of Surface Physics, such as LEED (Low Energy Electron Diffraction), XPS (X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) and XPD (X-ray Photoelectron Diffraction). The composition of the film was determined by XPS, the crystallographic ordering of the film was examined by LEED. The study of crystal structure and atomic arrangement of the surface was performed using XPD, and the computer simulations with MSCD (Multiple Scattering Calculation of Diffraction) program. This study had the advantage of be element-specific short-range order information obtained from XPD experiments, supported by a comprehensive multiple scattering calculation diffraction approach. The results show that the Cr2O3/Ag(111) was oriented along the [0001] direction with an oxygen surface termination under the preparation conditions used in the present work. For the model catalyst Pt/Cr2O3/Ag(111), the deposition of Pt atoms on the Cr2O3 surface formed a three-monolayer structures, fcc packed and oriented in the [111] direction, which presented changes in monolayer spacing and lateral atomic distance compared to the expected values for bulk Pt. The experiments indicated that the islands are constructed of two Au monolayers with fcc packed and oriented in the [111] direction and formed by the important structural relaxations in the three outermost atomic layers of the Au/Cr2O3/Ag(111) model catalyst surface. The method of preparation applied to SrTiO3(111), formed a surface with coexistence of both structures, 30% with termination in SrOx and 70% with termination in Ti, TiO2 predominantly on the top surface, followed by changes in the interplanar spacing of the surface. Knowledge of the structural and electronic parameters of the surfaces, such as transition metal oxide and model catalysts, and its relationship with the methods of sample preparation are the key, since such modifications can promote, influence and explain phenomena with technological application in several areas of science.en
