A supplementation trial was accomplished with whole male lambs rumen fistulated. The treatments were two supplementation levels with milled corn (0 and 1% of the body weight) and 4 levels of rumen degradable intake protein (DIP: 0, 40, 80 and 120%) in relation to the estimated requirements of 13% of the digestible organic matter. The forage used it was Coast Cross hay (Cynodon dactylon) of low-quality (CP: 5,5%, NDF: 78,6%). The DIP sources were the soybean isolated protein and the starea. The major measures were: digestibility, intake, ruminal pH and N-NH3, rumen degradability of DM and NDF, and ruminal degradation parameters. On the digestibility effects of DIP were just observed when there was energy supplementation, being the lineal and positive effect for the digestibility of the OM, NDF, cellulose, organic matter true digestibility and estimated hay digestibility. There were not effects of the DIP supplementation with the intake, being just this affected for the energy supplementation. The levels of ruminal ammonia increased with the DIP supplementation, however the response was lineal when there was supplemental energy and quadratic when there was not energy supplement. The ruminal pH was affected by the level of energy and for the availability of N-NH3 in the rumen, being both in a negative way. The increase in the concentration of N-NH3 affected the digestibility when the energy was supplemented, and there was not effect when only DIP was supplemented. The ruminal degradability of the DM and of NDF was affected negatively for the level of energy, starting from 6 up to 96 hours of incubation. The rate of ruminal degradation of the DM and of NDF were affected positive and lineally for the DIP supplementation in the presence of energy supplement, not showing effect in the absence of energy. The analysis of the regression data of digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) showed an increase the animals that received energy supplement when the relationship between the consumption of DIP and DOMI (DIP:DOMI) it was around 11,8% and there was not response in the absence of energy supplement. The ideal DIP:DOMI relationship as well as the rumen ammonia nitrogen concentration are dependent of the used diet.en
