This present study searches to explore the aspects that are connected with motivational dimensions to the regular practice of physical exercises in gymnasiums. The general objective of this study is to identify, among the principal motivational dimensions (Stress Control, Health, Sociability, Competition, Aesthetics and Pleasure), the ones that represent the main reasons that lead to regular practice of gymnastics in a gymnasium. This research used both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study aimed at testing whether or not there are significant statistical differences among the averages of the dimensions evaluated by the Inventory of Motives for the Regular Practice of Physical and Sport Activities - IMPRAFE-54 (BALBINOTTI; BARBOSA, 2006; 2008) controlling the variances “Sex”, “Age” and “Time of Practice”, besides using interviews to better understand the results in the quantitative part. The items of IMPRAFE-54 are responded in a Likert Scale graded in five points, from “This motivates me very little” (1) to “This motivates me very much” (5). The inventory was applied in 151 practitioners of classes in gymnasium gymnastics in gymnasiums of Porto Alegre/RS, of both sexes, ages from 18 to 75 years old. The interviews were performed with 8 (eight) practitioners representative of the sample and who followed the pre-established criteria. It was found out that the dimensions that most motivated the practitioners of gymnastic classes are: Health, followed by the pair Aesthetics and Pleasure statistically inseparable (p > 0,05), Stress Control, Sociability and, at last, Competition, what is confirmed by the interview answers. Regarding the controlled variances, the results show that Sociability motivates more significantly male practitioners while Aesthetics motivate the female ones. Concerning the age, it was found out that Aesthetics motivates more significantly the practitioners from 18 to 35 years old, while sociability motivates the ones from 36 years old on. Regarding practice time, sociability appears as the one that motivates more significantly the practitioners who have started for over one year. The other dimensions motivate the same way both the ones who have adhered less than one year as well as the ones who have remained over one year. It is concluded that the motivation of the tested subjects mainly arises in the Health dimension (extrinsic motivation). For the teacher, it is relevant information so that he or she may focus his or her classes to enable students to achieve their goals, increasing both their class attendance and stay. New researches are important to map the reasons of different practitioners with other controlled variances.en
