A noção de endoxa no método da ethica eudemia de Aristóteles

Abstract

Apresentamos aqui um problema acerca do método na Ethica Eudemia, a saber: como caracterizar os endoxa a fim de compreender sua função nas prescrições metodológicas que Aristóteles faz em EE I 6 de como proceder na busca definicional. Os endoxa são as opiniões reputadas que podem pertencer a muitos, aos sábios ou aos mais ilustres dentre os sábios. A partir dessa caracterização ampla, tentamos compreender os endoxa dentro de um recorte mais preciso, a partir de sua relação com as noções de phainomena e da relação “mais cognoscível para nós” e “mais cognoscível em si” que se estabelece entre conjunto de opiniões reputadas. Tendo este quadro conceitual, trabalhamos com duas hipóteses: a primeira, de Berti, de que os endoxa têm um papel mitigado na busca definicional, sendo instrumentos para o debate nos moldes dos Tópicos. Por outro lado, na segunda hipótese, seguindo a leitura de Barnes, as opiniões reputadas possuem determinada autonomia como método, tendo essa tese ficado conhecida como “método dos endoxa”; nela, há conflito entre essas opiniões, e o conflito leva à necessidade de um método que separe e “filtre”, nas palavras de Barnes, conjuntos de crenças cuja reputabilidade é demonstrada pela consistência do conjunto. Por suscitar uma discussão mais profícua e não se encerrar nos Tópicos, além de estabelecer um método muito parecido com o que é proposto em Ethica Eudemia I 6, defendemos a hipótese baseada na tese de Barnes e a utilizamos para, por fim, analisar – no último capítulo – agora com uma concepção precisa de endoxa, a passagem metodológica de I 6 que norteou os empreendimentos desta pesquisa desde o início.

Here we present a problem about the method in Ethica Eudemia, namely: how to characterize the endoxa in order to understand their role in methodological prescriptions that Aristotle does in EE I 6 on how to proceed in definitional search. The endoxa are the reputable opinions that may belong to many, the wise and the most distinguished among the wise. From this broad characterization, we try to understand the endoxa within a more precise cut, from his relationship with the notion of phainomena and the relationship "more knowable to us" and "more knowable itself" that are established between set of opinions reputable. Having this conceptual framework, we work with two hypotheses: first, Berti's tesis, that endoxa have a role mitigated the definitional search, and tools for the debate along the lines of topics. On the other hand, in the second case, following the reading Barnes, the opinions have certain autonomy reputed as a method having this thesis become known as "method of endoxa"; in it there is conflict between these opinions, and the conflict leads to the need for a method that separates and "filter", in Barnes words, beliefs sets whose reputable character is demonstrated by the consistency of the assembly. By elicit a more fruitful discussion and not to close the topics, and to establish a very similar method to what is proposed in Ethica Eudemia I 6, we defend the hypothesis based on Barnes thesis and use it to finally analyze – in the last chapter and now with a more accurate view of endoxa –, the methodological passage of I 6 that guided the developments of this research from the beginning.
