Obesity is a chronic multifactorial disease whose prevalence is increasing rapidly and may have important consequences on oral health. Saliva has an important role in oral health and assessment of biochemical and microbiological aspects could help to check the dental health of obese patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the conditions of salivary morbidly obese patients before and after undergoing bariatric surgery. The sample consisted of 25 patients diagnosed with morbid obesity who underwent bariatric surgery at the Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição. We analyzed the saliva of these patients, the stimulated salivary flow rate, pH, buffering capacity, levels of mutans streptococci, Lactobacillus spp. and Candida albicans before and after 6 months of surgery. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student t test and the Wilcoxon nonparametric test. The results (mean ± standard deviation) before and after bariatric surgery, respectively, were: stimulated salivary flow rate 1.27 ± 0.54 and 1.35 ± 0.66 mL / min, pH 7.00 ± 0.65 and 7.00 ± 0.65; buffering capacity 4.54 ± 0.58 and 4.4 ± 0.70; levels of mutans streptococci 4.85 ± 1.03 and 5.37 ± 0.75 log10 CFU / mL, levels of Lactobacillus spp. 3.76 ± 1.20 and 3.89 ± 1.16 log10 CFU / mL, and levels of Candida albicans 3.12 ± 0.88 and 2.81 ± 0.77 log10 CFU / mL. The results show that among all variables was only an increase in the levels of mutans streptococci after 6 months of surgery (p = 0.01). The variables did not change significantly, however were observed. The results suggest that morbidly obese patients have high levels of Candida albicans in saliva before and after bariatric surgery. In addition, increased levels of mutans streptococci in saliva is checked after bariatric surgery. Therefore, special attention should be given to this group of patients in order to monitor the possible oral manifestations related to these micro-organisms.en
