It was evaluated the effects of early weaning at 76 days (EW) and conventional weaning (CW) at 148 days old during tree consecutive years on the performance of beef cows and of their male and female calves. One hundred and forty-one Braford cows were used initially as primiparous cows in 2004, and afterward in 2005 and 2006, only the cows that got pregnant in the two treatments were used. From the first two calvings were analyzed the performance of 161 females and 103 male calves. The cows and calves were managed as an unique group. The characteristics studied in cows were the live weight at calving (CLW), at EW, at CW, at the beginning (WIR) and end (WER) of the reproduction period, mean daily weight variation (DLV), body condition (BC), pregnancy rate (PR) and calving interval (CI). EW cows showed positive DLV between EW e CW, in relation of CW cows (.353 vs –.092 kg/day, respectively), were heavier (409.3 vs 381.0 kg, respectively) and displayed better body condition (3.78 vs 3.31 points) when CW was performed. PR of EW (86.34%) was higher than for CW cows (55.45%). The highest benefit of early weaning on pregnancy rate was observed for first calf cows. Early weaning of calves resulted in a higher recovery of cow’s weight after weaning and during the reproductive period, improving body condition and their pregnancy rate. The heifers growth and reproductive performance at 14 months of age, were evaluated. The DLV between the weaning ages were similar during the three years for EW, but increased significantly according to the year for the CW calves. There was no significant difference between EW and CW for live weight at beginning and end of the mating period. Pregnancy rate was not affected by heifers weaning age, 55.5 and 70.7% for EW and CW, respectively. Heifers that became pregnant showed higher growth during the growing phase and mating period than the non-pregnant ones. The characteristics calf birth weight and weaning weight were not affect by the weaning age of their mothers, with mean values of 28.0 and 88.6 kg, respectively. The distocia, calving, birth and weaning rates did not differ between the original treatments. The two treatments had higher conception concentrations during the first (47.9%) and intermediary (40.8%) thirds of the mating periods than during the final third (11.3%). Heifers age at first conception was 438 and 434 days for EW and CW, respectively. The steers growth, until 16 months of age, and their carcass characteristics, were evaluated. At the end of summer pasture, EW and CW steers were similar in weight (340.1 and 332.8 kg, respectively) and in BC (4.14 and 4.15 points, respectively), not showing differences for carcass characteristics. Heifers and male calves submitted to early weaning did not differ in performance to calves weaned at conventional age.en
