A indeterminação em português : uma perspectiva discrônico-funcional

Abstract

A indeterminação recobre uma noção semântica em que o referente não é identificado: alguma coisa na frase designa um ser (ao que tudo indica animado) cuja referência, em princípio, não é possível determinar. Retomando trabalhos já feitos sobre esse assunto, e investigando textos de diferentes séculos, nosso objeto de estudo é a função de indeterminação, sob as diversas formas em que se apresenta, em português. Nosso estudo assume uma perspectiva funcionalista, com apoio também na Lingüística Histórica. O objetivo geral da pesquisa é identificar e analisar casos de indeterminação, manifestada por marcas morfossintáticas e lexicais, em português escrito, em diferentes séculos, buscando evidências de variação (e mudança) dos recursos de expressão de tal uso e analisando sua freqüência de emprego, através de estudo qualitativo e quantitativo. Os resultados permitem algumas verificações. Uma é o aumento de frases de interpretação dupla (tanto reflexiva como passiva), que apareceram com muita freqüência no século XX. Embora a construção seja ambígua, a informação transmitida não é. Outra verificação é a das restrições morfossintáticas que incidem sobre expressões lexicais que expressam indeterminação. Confirma-se mais uma vez o uso do se indeterminador como a forma mais freqüente desde o século XVI. Também marcam presença – e desde registros muito antigos – a terceira pessoa do plural e a passiva sem agente. Todas as formas que indicam indeterminação têm restrições de alguma ordem – sintática, semântica, morfológica. Assim, embora a interpretação arbitrária se construa no discurso, suas marcas acabam entrando no sistema da língua.

Indeterminacy or arbitrary interpretation recovers a semantic notion in which the referent is not identified: some particular construction or lexical unit indicates a being (so far animate) whose referent, in principle, cannot be determined. Our object of study is the set of morpho-syntactic or lexical forms that indicate such indeterminacy in Portuguese, in different periods of time. Indeterminacy is assumed as a function, under its various forms. Functional Grammar and Historical Linguistics provide us with theoretical support. Our main goal is to identify and to analyse forms of indeterminacy in Noun Phrases, in written texts, in different periods of the History of Portuguese. We also search for variation (and change) of the forms of indeterminacy and observe its frequency of use, through the use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. One of our results shows the increased number of sentences of double interpretation, either passive or reflexive, that appear in texts, mainly throughout twentieth century. Although the interpretation of their construction is ambiguous, the semantic information transmitted does not change. Other result investigates the morpho-syntactic restrictions that lexical expressions undergo when expressing indeterminacy. The use of indefinite se as the most frequent form, since sixteenth century, is once again confirmed. Other forms, like verbs in the third person plural and passive without agent, are noticeably frequent. All the forms that indicate indeterminacy have some restriction of any order, either in the field of syntax, semantics, or morphology. So, despite the fact that arbitrary interpretation is built in discourse, its marks become part of the linguistic system.
