O envelhecimento e suas repercussões na endodontia

Abstract

O envelhecimento biológico é um fenômeno universal, dinâmico, progressivo e comum a todos os seres vivos. O envelhecimento da população brasileira acompanha uma tendência internacional. Nesse sentido, parece importante que o cirurgião-dentista esteja atento à repercussão das condições sistêmicas e sócio culturais na prática odontológica e as especificidades do manejo clínico em idosos. Modificações histológicas, celulares e moleculares da polpa e alterações anatômicas da estrutura dental fazem com que o planejamento clínico em idosos deva ser individual e diferenciado. O objetivo desta revisão de literatura é discutir as repercussões do processo de envelhecimento e alternativas de tratamento endodôntico frente às características dele decorrentes. Ainda hoje, apesar da demanda por informações acerca do tema, faltam respostas na literatura que embasem protocolos para atender as especificidades da crescente população idosa.

Biological aging is a universal phenomenon, dynamic, progressive and common to all humans. The aging of the Brazilian population follows an international trend. It is important for the dental surgeon to be aware of the impact of the systemic and socio-cultural conditions in dental practice, as much as the issues of clinical management in the elderly. Clinical planning in the elderly must be individual and different, due to histological modifications, cellular and molecular pulp and anatomical changes of the dental structure. The purpose of this review is to discuss the consequences of the aging process and alternatives in endodontic treatment that better fit to this condition. Even today, there is a lack of studies, and despite the need for information about this topic, there is a shortfall in literature about protocols that serve to the needs of the increasing elderly.
