As investigações, inclusive experimentos com animais, não mostram uma resposta definitiva sendo que muitos apontam um efeito negativo, ao passo que outros mostram influência temporária ou nenhuma no crescimento. A preocupação com o tema tem aumentado nos últimos anos, na medida que o esporte competitivo está sendo praticado por um número crescente de crianças pré-púberes e púberes. Esta revisão avalia o efeito do esporte competitivo no crescimento ósseo longitudinal e alguns dos fatores que influenciam a estatura final, em crianças pré-púberes e púberes.
