Um estudo sobre a representação mental da polissemia : procedimentos metodológicos em um teste de memória

Abstract

Neste trabalho, investigamos a representação lexical de itens polissêmicos, por meio de um teste de memória baseado em um experimento de Klein e Murphy (2001). No teste, os participantes viam uma palavra polissêmica duas vezes, em sintagmas que poderiam utilizar o mesmo sentido ou um sentido diferente da palavra. Este teste tinha o intuito de investigar se os diferentes sentidos de um item polissêmico são representados distintamente ou se há apenas um significado central no léxico mental. Os resultados obtidos através do nosso teste divergem do resultado do estudo original (KLEIN e MURPHY, 2001). Em nosso estudo, não houve diferença significativa entre a condição de mesmo sentido e a de sentido diferente, ao passo que essa diferença foi significativa no estudo original. A partir dessa observação, discutimos questões metodológicas que envolvem, entre outras coisas, grau e tipo de relações de sentido.

In this study, we examine the lexical representation of polysemous words, using a memory test based in an experiment from Klein and Murphy (2001). In this test, subjects saw a polysemous word twice, in phrases that could use the same sense of this word or a different sense. This test aimed to investigate if the different senses of a polysemous item are represented separately, or if there is only a core meaning in the mental lexicon. The results obtained through our test are different from those obtained in the original experiment (KLEIN and MURPHY, 2001). In our study, there was no significant difference between the same-sense condition and the different-sense condition, while this difference was significant in the original experiment. From this observation, we discuss some methodological questions, including, among other things, strength and type of sense relations.
