The aim ofthis paper is to analyze the short stories of Machado de Assis in the light of the discussion of the literary motif of the double. Taking as a starting point the fictional production of Edgar A. Poe and Freud (and more recently) Kristeva's critical reflexions as far as the double issue is concerned, the very construction of Machado de Assis" short stories lies on the same conceptual notion, both on thematic and structural aspects. Thus, in Machado de Assis" brief writings, doubleness itself may stand for ambiguity and strangeness, but also contributes for the assumption of the writer's own textual alterity whereas emphasizes the idea of considering his literary achievements as definite parts ofa work in progress.en
