The practice of rowing in Porto Alegre city has increased in the first two decades of the twentieth century because of the founding associations of rowers by immigrants coming from Europe and their descendants. These row associations were shaped as an environment for building representations of cultural identities of immigrant Germans, Portuguese, Italians and their descendants. Given this scenario, the research problem is presented: witch representations of cultural identities were produced by rowing associations founded in Porto Alegre, in the long century XIX? Searching for answers to decipher this question, historical sources were used in the research: documents, forms and imagery. The main sources consulted, documentary and pictures, were the minutes of rowing clubs and the newspapers "The Federation" and "The Independent". The sources were extracted using imagery of the pictures of the printed sources, archives of the clubs and commemorative albums. The sources revealed that in the early twentieth century, there was an empire of rowing associations that produced representations of cultural identities Teutonic-Brazilian in the first rowing clubs based in Porto Alegre: the Ruder Club Porto Alegre and the Ruder Verein Germania. These two associations founded the first Brazilian federal entity, the Regatta Committee. In reaction to this hegemony, an association of rowers brought up founded by Portuguese-Brazilian Grêmio de Regatas AlmiranteTamandaré. The installation of this association marks the intensification of disputes in the identity of the rowing scene in Porto Alegre. In this same period, representatives of these diverse groups get together around a row association that grouped representations of Teutonic-Brazilian, Luso-Brazilian and Brazilian cultural identities, the Clube de Regatas Almirante Barroso. With the foundation of new associations, rowing races became occasions in which identity representations were disputed between the associations. Among these rowing competitions, a group of young Teutonic-Brazilians founded the first youth association of rowing, Ruder Verein Freundschaft. Although approaching Teutonic-Brazilian cultural identities, this association that brought together young rowers just fought a battle to demarcate space on individual associations in Porto Alegre. Another row association has emerged to be represented in the practice of rowing: the Clube Italiano Canottieri Ducca degli Abruzzi. This club congregated mostly Italian-Brazilian, who until then was facing symbolic barriers to integrate into the other rowing clubs. These identity differences were potentiated in the second decade of the twentieth century, in the rowing competition, where fans identify with their associations and often came into conflict to defend them, as occurred in 1911 in the State Championship. In the late 1910s, new identity representations appeared in rowing, with the founding of the Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama. The pioneers of this club sought to build a cultural identity Luso-South-Rio-Grandense. In that same year, in 1917, partnerships with cultural identities Teutonic-Brazilian aggregated representations of a Brazilian cultural identity. Accordingly, we believe that the conflicts of identity were one aspect that contributed to the expansion of the practice of rowing in the sports clubs in the city of Porto Alegre.en
