The main objective of this study is to map the eucalyptus plantations in the cities of Barra do Ribeiro and Mariana Pimentel and characterize the processes of environmental degradation associated with eucalyptus. The study area is bounded between latitudes 30° 10'S - 30° 30'S and the meridians 51° 05'W - 51° 40'W, approximately 1060 km ². At the first stage of the work, we sought to raise bibliography, cartographical material (vectorial and raster), remote sensing and equipment needed to carry out the geological and geomorphological analysis of the studied area. We also aimed to map the expansion of forest monoculture between 1986 and 2010. Afterward, field activities were conducted in order to identify the processes of environmental degradation associated with the cultivation of eucalyptus in the region. The results show that areas with eucalyptus plantations have grown more than 65 km ², whereas areas covered by woody vegetation and agricultural areas decreased in the period between the mappings. With the aid of techniques and the combination of the mapped data with altimetry, slope and geomorphology of the region, it became evident that the monoculture forest is advancing, especially on the Uruguayan Plateau areas of Rio Grande do Sul where there is a prodomination of small farms destined for various agricultural crops. With the field work it was possible to absorb information from reality and identify signs of degradation that are not visible through the mappings with orbital images.en
