The evaluation of physical fitness and functional capacity of older people are gaining prominence in research on aging. In order to provide knowledge about the selection, administration and interpretation of test batteries different protocols, relating the ADL´s, autonomy and independence of the elderly. This review had intended to check in the literature, the structures and contents of test batteries used nationally and internationally, that evaluate more comprehensively the physical fitness and the functional capacity of older people. We define how verify specific objective congruence of the methodologies used in the tests and results found with your application in different studies. For this, were used as a way to search the search sites and database (Capes, Scielo, Ef. Deportes, Pub Med, Scopus, Digital Library, Isi Web of knowledge, Google Scholar). The scientific terms, keywords, used individually or combined were: "physical fitness", "functional capacity", "battery of tests" and "seniors". In this review were used articles, books, theses in Portuguese and English. Among the protocols referred to in national studies include four batteries of tests: the TAFI or "Fullerton Fitness Test", the battery of the American Association of recreational activities and sports for health (AAHPERD), the Functional evaluation tests in activities of daily living (TADL ADL's) and the functional evaluation of the Group of Latin American Development par. Congruencies between batteries were found, with respect to the objectives and structure. However, some studies have shown differences in applicability of protocols and low trust.en
