The method of optical monitoring was applied to a class of non-Newtonian fluids that follow the power law model during the spin coating process. This class represents the flow of most polymer solutions, which have great potential of applications in opto-electronics. An exact analytic solution to the thickness variation for this model was found by means of an Ansatz. The solution leads to the definition of the characteristic time, which is associated with the profile of the thickness variation during the flow and with the measurement reproducibility. The experimental data, obtained in real time and in situ - for several concentrations of CMC, HPMC and HEC, fluids that typically follow the power law, and for various angular velocities of the spinner - presented a good fit to the theoretical model, with the exception of some end points . The smooth fitting of the curve allowed the accurate determination of the parameters of the flow. The potencies of the model, as well as the rheological constants associated with the concentrations, shown to be consistent in the experimental range tested, and both represent adequately the steady state flow. This allowed quantify the characteristic time, which represent the time interval that depends on the initial thickness. The small values found for the characteristic times, compared to the total stationary flow time, indicated the loss of memory in the initial thickness and the increase of the dependency of the flow in the angular velocity and in the rheological constant, showing thus the reproducibility observed experimentally. It was possible to associate the characteristic times with the profiles of the thickness variations in a series of measurements, since small characteristic time lose their memory in the initial profile, and separate earlier from the other measures of thickness variations. Similarly near characteristic times tend to evolve superimposed for longer time. The accuracy in determining the parameters of the flow and the low characteristic times confirmed the functionality of the interferometric monitoring method, as well as of the analytical solution for the thickness of the power law model, except for the final period of flow. This discrepancy may depend on both in the ineffectiveness of the model in representing small thicknesses, as well as in the changing of the refractive index of the fluid at the end of the flow.en
