Porto Alegre, arquitetura e estilo - 1880 a 1930 -

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo o mapeamento analítico de exemplares da arquitetura de Porto Alegre no período 1880-1930, caracterizado pelo predomínio do ecletismo. Devido à multiplicidade de linguagens arquitetônicas, este período contrasta fortemente com a relativa homogeneidade da arquitetura anterior, na cidade, representada pela arquitetura colonial portuguesa, até 1822, e pelo neoclassicismo, durante o período imperial. O trabalho tem por marco temporal um período no qual a cidade deixa de exibir tal homogeneidade, iniciando em 1880 e seguindo até as últimas manifestações da arquitetura eclética. Ao longo do período, são identificados estilos arquitetônicos predominantes nas edificações eruditas e de maior porte. Cada estilo é abordado num capítulo deste trabalho. A elaboração textual de cada capítulo segue uma mesma organização: é redigida uma contextualização da manifestação do estilo no âmbito internacional, nacional e regional; são identificadas as ocorrências deste estilo nas edificações de Porto Alegre, nas quais haja predominância das características descritas; e, por fim, é feita a análise de algumas obras. As análises feitas e apresentadas neste trabalho dão ênfase à observação da edificação quanto a sua volumetria e ornamentação, referindo-se menos à solução planimétrica e espacial. Cabe destacar que foi possível a classificação de obras, segundo diferentes estilos, devido à predominância de suas características ornamentais. Entretanto, exceções se mostraram presentes, seja por manifestações pontuais, isto é, sem outra edificação equivalente, seja por manifestações sem predominância alguma quanto ao estilo. A opção encontrada para considerálas neste trabalho foi agrupá-las no capítulo Experimentações Ecléticas.

This dissertation has the objective to map the analytical framework of the architecture of Porto Alegre between the years of 1880 and 1930. This moment was characterized by the eclecticism. Due to the multiplicity of the architectural languages this period contrasts strongly with the relative homogeneity of the previous architecture of the city, dominated by the Portuguese colonial architecture until 1822 and the neoclassicism during the imperial period. The work defines a period in which the city does not exhibit such homogeneity according to the latest manifestations of the eclectic architecture. The architectural styles predominant in the erudite and larger buildings are identified over the period. Each style is discussed in a separate chapter. Every chapter of this work has the same structure: there is the contextualization of the style in the international, national and regional spheres; the local buildings presenting each style are identified; and finally, some works are analyzed. The analysis made and presented in this work emphasizes the observation of the building in relation to its massing and ornamentation, referring less to the planimetric and spatial solution. It is important to emphasize that the classification of the works in various styles was possible due to the predominance of its ornamental characteristics. However, there are exceptions, either unique cases without any other equivalent building or cases in which the predominance of a specific style cannot be detected. In order to consider these exceptions they were grouped in the Chapter Eclectic Trials.
