The aim of this study was to develop a digital learning object (DLO) aimed at teach, train and calibrate examiners for the detection of caries lesions by visual examination using ICDAS (http://www.icdas.org). Therefore, 60 questions were devised using the Wondershare Quizcreator version 4.2.0. software (trial version). The questions comprised photographs of dental surfaces varying from sound to carious in their different stages of severity. All questions were devised in such a way that the a lesion indicated at a photograph would be related to an ICDAS score. Five different types of questions were formulated: multiple response, multiple choice, click map, fill in the blank and true/flase. After the answer had been given, the examiner gets the information whether it is correct or not. When incorrect, the examiner has another chance to answer. After the examiner had given the right answer or twice the wrong one, the DLO shows the next question. In this moment, the examiner has the possibility to review the question but it is not possible to change the answer. At the end of the 60 questions, the examiner is allowed to visualize an explanation of each answer as well as the number of right responses. After the questions had been devised, the DLO was validated on its construction and contend by three experienced researchers. Errors and divergences were then corrected and the DLO concluded. Next steps comprise the evaluation of the learning effect of this DLO associated or not with the ICDAS e-learning on dental students and experienced dentists in the detection of caries using ICDAS as well the translation into other languages (english, german and Spanish).en
