This work presents the process of prostitute women’s associative involvement at the non-governmental organization “Núcleo de Estudos da Prostituição” - NEP - in Porto Alegre. Initially, the investigation identifies the meaning of the engagement and the mobilization for prostitute women. Then, the work verifies the prostitutes’ intentions to get in the NEP and eventual changes that might occur in that first motivation from the interaction they have with / in the organization. Therefore, it is analysed whether these women seek the NEP by an identification with its cause or by pragmatic reasons – which, from the interaction, are incorporating/sharing identities, and if there are any changing of meaning that prostitutes may attribute to NEP as well as their participation on it. The research is a case study and has been developed through participant observation at the NEP, interviews with prostitutes involved in the NEP, as well as documentary research method. Based on analysis of data collected and theoretical aspects, the work has tried to highlight some issues involved in the process of prostitutes’ engagement, such as questions about the retribution and recognition, the meaning of engagement in the world of prostitution and the involvement in an entity with the NEP characteristics. As we seek the reasons of the prostitutes involved in the organization, we face the material and symbolic aspects of this engagement. In this sense, we consider that the prostitutes have engaged in NEP to looking for retribution. Thus, we can infer that in the case analyzed, initially women prostitutes seek to engage in NEP for pragmatic reasons: they need to give an end for the violence suffered by police abuse. Subsequently, these women decide to continue militancy, incorporating other motivations, such as the fight for prevention of STDs, HIV and SIDA, promotion of self-esteem of prostitute women, and a social reintegration, sharing the identity of militants. When we perceive engagement as a citizenship process, the work concludes that associative involvement in the world of prostitution can be characterized as the search for social justice.en
