Itinerarium fratris Willielmi de Rubruquis de ordine fratrum Minorum : transformações nas formas de representação do mundo de um viajante medieval

Abstract

O presente trabalho busca analisar as transformações nas formas de representação do mundo em um relato de viagem medieval. Trata-se do Itinerarium produzido pelo franciscano Guilherme de Rubruck, após sua viagem ao Império Mongol, no extremo oriente asiático, em meados do século XIII. Procuramos nesta pesquisa identificar como uma combinação de elementos possibilitou, a partir da baixa Idade Média, o início de uma transformação nas formas de pensar e representar o mundo nos registros deixados por viajantes. Tal transformação se deu pela substituição de um discurso predominantemente marcado pela presença da Mirabília e pela negação do mundo físico, estabelecida através da noção do Contemptus Mundi, por outro baseado numa forma de representação muito mais descritiva e racionalizada. Chamamos a atenção para o fato de a fonte pesquisada apresentar esses elementos de forma precoce, visto que a Mirabília, sobretudo, estaria ainda presente nas formas de pensar e representar o mundo doravante. Buscamos responder as questões apresentadas por meio da realização de uma pesquisa analítica, empreendida através do estudo da fonte, além de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema. Os referenciais teóricos que balizam este trabalho estão ancorados nos marcos da História Cultural, e são influenciados pelos escritos de autores como Roger Chartier, Jacques Le Goff, Paul Zumthor e François Hartog. Procuramos também proceder à análise de outras fontes do período, a fim de possibilitar um estudo comparativo da temática proposta. Como objetivo do trabalho, buscaremos confirmar a hipótese de que uma combinação de fatores religiosos, políticos e culturais, que tiveram início no período anterior e atingiram seu ápice no século XIII, contribuiu para possibilitar essa mudança nas formas de representação presentes na fonte estudada e que viriam a se acentuar nos séculos seguintes.

This work explores the transformations in the ways of representing the world in a medieval travel report. It regards Itinerarium, produced by Franciscan William of Rubruck, after his travel to the Mongol Empire, in the Far East Asian around the 13th century. This study aims to identify how a combination of elements made possible, from the late Middle Ages on, the beginning of a transformation in ways of thinking and representing the world in the records left by travelers. This transformation occurred by the replacement of a speech marked by the presence of the predominantly Mirabilia and the denial of the physical world, established through the notion of Contemptus Mundi, by another form of representation based on a much more descriptive and rationalized practice. We draw attention to the fact that the source presents these elements untimely, for the Mirabilia, especially, would still be present in ways of thinking and representing the world hereafter. We seek answering the questions submitted by performing an analytical research undertaken through the study of the source, a literature review on the subject and the study of theoretical frameworks that guide this work, anchored in the framework of Cultural History and influenced by the writings of authors such as Roger Chartier, Jacques Le Goff, Paul Zumthor and François Hartog. We also seek to examine other sources of the period in order to allow a comparative study of the proposed theme. This essay purpose is to confirm the hypothesis that a combination of religious, political and cultural elements, which started in the previous period and has peaked in the 13th century, contributed to allow this change in the forms of representation presented in the source studied and that would be accentuated in the following centuries.
