Urbanidade e estrutura espacial

Abstract

Meu intuito nesse artigo é explorar as possibilidades do conceito de urbanidade desde o ponto de vista da estrutura espacial. A condição de urbanidade tem seu uso tradicionalmente dirigido a pessoas exprimindo delicadeza, cortesia, civilidade, polidez. Recentemente, no entanto, arquitetos e pesquisadores em nosso campo de estudo se apropriaram do termo e passaram a utilizá-lo na qualificação de edifícios, bairros e cidades. Vejo a condição de urbanidade, similarmente ao termo original, como a capacidade de acolhimento que os lugares oferecem às pessoas. Trata-se de um conceito em formação e que parece assumir, no entendimento desses autores, o papel de síntese de atributos arquitetônicos e urbanísticos que em conjunto viriam a determinar a qualidade, a performance e, em última instância, o sucesso ou não dos lugares. Que atributos seriam esses? Do que seria constituída a dita urbanidade em edifícios e cidades? Na busca de alguma elucidação para essas perguntas, esse artigo explora as possibilidades de descrição da urbanidade através dos componentes físico-espaciais que a constituem. Minha hipótese de trabalho preconiza que a urbanidade seria essencialmente produto da estrutura espacial de uma determinada situação urbana. Em minha verificação dos elementos estruturais constituintes da condição de urbanidade tomei o Centro da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro como estudo de caso. Utilizo recursos da sintaxe espacial, mapas axiais, na descrição dessa condição estrutural. Valho-me de descrições cartográficas de diferentes períodos da história da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro no estudo da consolidação dessa condição estrutural. Busco mostrar que a justaposição / sobreposição continuada de elementos novos e permanências seja elemento chave na realização da condição de urbanidade.

My intention with this article is to explore the possibilities of the concept of urbanity from the point of view of spatial structure. The concept of urbanity has been traditionally used to refer to people who are urbane, that is, show qualities of good manners, courtesy, civility and politeness. Recently, however, architects and researchers in the field of architecture have adopted the term and began to use it for the qualification of buildings, city districts and cities. The way I see that condition of urbanity though is more compatible with the original meaning of the word, that is, the capability of buildings for welcoming and sheltering people. This is still a concept in transition that tends to take the role of a synthesis of architectural and urbanistic attributes. These attributes would thenas a whole - determine the quality, performance and lastly the success or failure of places. What would these attributes be? Which would the components of such buildings and cities be? The search for answers to these questions leads to the possibilities of a description of urbanity through its physical-spatial components. The hypothesis is that urbanity is essentially a product of the spatial structure in a given urban situation. The Rio de Janeiro city center was used as case-study for analyzing the structural elements that make up for the condition of urbanity. Spatial syntax and axial maps were used in the description of this structural condition. Also were cartographic descriptions from different periods of the city history. The study tries to show that the continuous superimposition of new and stable elements are the key elements in the materialization of the condition of urbanity.
