Northanger Abbey e a leitora em formação

Abstract

Esta monografia tem como objetivo analisar a figura da leitora em formação apresentada ao longo do romance de Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey. O trabalho consistiu na recolha dos momentos de leitura presentes no texto da escritora inglesa, e, a partir desse material, no estudo dessas representações. Buscou-se, nessa etapa, entender a relação do enredo com o processo de aprendizagem de leitura da personagem principal, e com o sistema literário no qual a autora se inseria. A segunda parte da pesquisa consistiu na análise mais detida da personagem principal, Catherine Morland, como uma leitora em formação, que resultou na delimitação de quatro características particulares a essa figura: o interesse profundo por romances, a proximidade da interpretação do mundo real e do ficcional, o funcionamento da leitura de cartas como marca de maturidade, e a fusão entre o processo de leitura de textos e o processo de leitura de pessoas e situações.

The objective of this work is to analyze the image of the female reader in training presented throughout Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. The study consisted in collecting reading moments found in the novel, and, based on this material, in the examination of these representations. This procedure aimed at understanding the relation between the plot and the main character’s process of learning how to read, and also the literary system in which the author was inserted. The second part of the research consisted in the close analysis of the protagonist, Catherine Morland, as a reader in training. This resulted in the delimitation of four particular characteristics of this image: the profound interest in novels, the proximity between the interpretation of the fictional and the real world, the function of letter reading as a mark of maturity, and the fusion between the process of reading texts and the process of reading people and situations.
