O presente artigo enfoca os arranjos de obras polifônicas vocais para instru mentos de corda pulsada- alaúde e vihuela- realizados nos séculos 16 e 17. Denominados "intabulações", tais arranjos eram baseados tanto em obras vo cais religiosas como seculares. Após abordar as circunstâncias históricas do surgimento das intabulações, a discussão focaliza os métodos e técnicas utili zados pelos alaudistas e vihuelistas no processo de adaptação instrumental dos originais vocais. Procura-se também estabelecer o papel das intabulações no desenvolvimento de um estilo de escrita puramente instrumental - i.e., desvinculado da música vocal - bem como sua importância como registro da transição do sistema modal para o tonal. ...

The present article studies sixteenth- and seventeenth-century arrangements of vocal polyphonic works for the lute and the vihuela. Known as "intabulations", such arrangements were based on both sacred and secular vocal works. After discussing the historical background of intabulations, attention is given to the methods and techniques employed by lute and vihuela players in the arrangement process from the original vocais. Known as "intabulations", such arrangements were based on both sacred and secular vocal works. After discussing the historical background of intabulations, attention is given to the methods and techniques employed by lute and vihuela players in the arrangement process from the original vocais. The discussion also focuses on the role played by intabulations in the development of a purely instrumental writing style, as well as on its importance in documenting the transition from the modal to the harmonic systems. ...
