During the nineteenth-century, the city of Pelotas went trough a great economic development, due to the use of slave labor in the charqueadas, which favored the artistic, urban and cultural development of the town. Journalism was met with success as well; by the turn of the century there were sixteen newspapers in Pelotas and, among these, three presented themselves as humorous and illustrated: Cabrion (1879 -1881); Zé Povinho (1883) and A Ventarola (1887 – 1889). A significant part of their artistic production was dedicated to the politics of their time. Nevertheless, they never stepped back from their main role, it means, to provide the reader with a burst of laughter by a comic depiction of reality, emphasizing the physical defects of someone in a disproportionate way or through the satirical presentation of a certain event. The present dissertation aims to analyze the representations of the political world of the 1880’s through the texts, news, chronicles and, specially, trough the cartoons and humorous illustrations present in those diaries. The research was divided in four themes, with the four chapters emphasizing each one of them. In a first moment, the diaries and their publishers were investigated, as well as their political orientation; later were analyzed the texts and images related to the public administration of the city, the national politics and those who addressed the Republican cause.en
