The first insertions of psychological activities in general hospitals in Brazil date from the decade of 1950. However, it was in last two decades that the interest for Psychology in medical settings grew significantly, arriving to organize itself as a specialty regulated by the Federal Advice of Psychology in 2000. Although such practice is sufficiently registered in the center of the country – the place where the psychologists had started to develop the first activities in general hospitals, the history developed in the South of the country lacks better registers. In this direction, the specific goal of this study is to rescue the history of the psychological activities in Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and to congregate data for the analysis of the psychology expansion at the moment where it goes into newer environments than not the traditional ones: clinic, school and industry. The demarcated period goes from 1971, with the opening of the Hospital, up to 1986, with the creation of a Department of Psychology that congregated the psychologists of the institution under the same command. For the collection and analysis of the data, the Oral History method was used, due to scarcity of written registers about the constitution and the development of the service in question. From this qualitative study was constructed a historical narrative. Ten professionals, who had developed activities in the area of psychology at different moments of the considered period, had been interviewed. As results, they consist in the narrative that Psychology entered in the HCPA by the Organizational way, to carry through the selection of the hospital employees. Just in a few years later Clinical Psychology was incorporated to the institution, by the unit of Pediatrics. It is argued that the destitutions suffered by the organizational sector, and the historical moment lived by Psychology, had been some of the reasons of the creation of an independent Department, because the official meeting of the professionals would supply greater autonomy and security to the psychologists in the institution. Moreover, the creation of the Department of Psychology in hospitals served as a reason for the consolidation of the Psychology in medical settings in Brazil.en
