The Horizonte cultural magazine has circulated in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) between the years 1949 and 1956. His collaborators were writers, journalists and visual artists linked to the Left, with some of them affiliated to the Communist Party. The poet Lila Ripoll (1905–1967) took over the management of the publication and the performers Vasco Prado (1914–1998) and Carlos Scliar (1920–2001) joined the Editorial Board since 1950. These changes in the staff were accompanied by a proposal for a renewing of content that would meet the guidelines of the style of socialist realism. In order to assist in the financial support of the Horizonte, the Engraving Club of Porto Alegre (Clube de Gravura de Porto Alegre – CGPA) was founded in 1950. However, the group was more than mere provider of the magazine – promoting art courses and exhibitions, the Engraving Club has encouraged the local cultural environment. In the city of Bagé (Brazil-RS), an institution similar to the CGPA was founded in 1951, the Engraving Club of Bagé. The inspiration to create the Clubs came from the meeting Scliar and Vasco with the Mexican engraver Leopoldo Méndez (1902-1969) in Europe, in 1948. Méndez was a founder of the Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP), an entity dedicated to graphic arts in which a collective way of working was played. The intention of this study is to document and discuss the illustrations published in Horizonte magazine, relating them to the works of artists of the TGP. To provide input to this proposal, we present a brief survey of media of the Left in the first half of the twentieth century in Brazil, intending to verify the lineage which includes the Horizonte.en
