This research focuses on teacher training analysis which makes up the Curriculum for Teachers Training in the Undergraduate Course of Physical Education at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (ESEF/ UFRGS). Through a case study, I describe, discuss and explore the impact of recent changes in the National Curriculum Guidelines for Teachers Training in Basic Education, more specifically the curricular traineeships, in the initial phases of Physical Education instruction. Among the implemented curricular changes, it is important to emphasize the increase in trainee workload, wich in the specific case of ESEF/UFRGS changed from 150 hours in only one semester to 450 hours divided into three semesters, and in the three stages of the educational system (early childhood education, elementary and high school). Such changes produced various effects in the ESEF/UFRGS curricular organization, especially in the relationship between theoretical and pedagogical practice in physical education. In general, the expansion of the teachers traineeship is presented in official documents (and recognized in the educational environment) as a positive element in the training of future teachers of all school subjects. However, if we consider the specific case of physical education, stigmatized as a mere practical subject, with little demands in terms of contents and usually far from the other school subjects, two questions are needed: what kind of contribution the expansion of teachers traineeships (both in the number of hours and in the range of educational levels) brings to the physical education teachers training? A higher larger practice time can lead to more qualified teachers, and more involved with constant principles, for instance, in the current national curriculum documents? To enable this discussion, the National Curricular Guidelines for Teacher Training in Basic Education will be analysed, as well as the documents available online by the Undergraduate Coordinator of the Pro-Rectory of Undergraduate studies at UFRGS (body responsible for the standardization of curriculum reforms), the curriculum of Physical Education degrees ESEF/UFRGS and all available documentation in the Commission on Undergraduate Education in Physical Education (COMGRAD) of ESEF/UFRGS. Besides the analysis of these documents, students who did the teachers traineeship at in high schools were interviewed in ESEF/UFRGS. This analysis is based on the academic literature review on initial training, more specifically on teachers traineeship, and it is sustained by authors who deal with studies in the Educational field, in consonance with authors who deal with the theme within the field of Physical Education. One of the main findings of this research has been the heterogeneity of the teachers‟ strategies responsible for teachers training, a fact that has been identified in the speeches of the interviewees.en
