The native grasslands of RS are composed by more than 3000 plant species, which form different grassland physiognomies. This diversity of species and physiognomy could be attributed mainly to variations in soil, topography and climate, besides the management of human action by stocking rate management and soil fertilization. Despite this diversity, Paspalum notatum is considered its major forage specie, the most frequent in all geographical regions of Rio Grande do Sul and contributing significantly to grassland cover. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of growing season and level of soil fertility on the shoot attributes (leaf dry matter content - LDMC and specific leaf area - SLA) and root (specific root length - SRL) in P. notatum. The experiment was conducted at the Agronomic Experimental Station of UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul – RS, in the year 2013. Three grazing paddocks with long history of grazing management and with different levels of soil fertility were used. In each paddock three experimental units randomized were located in a similar topographic position to collect samples of leaves and roots of P. notatum at three growth seasons (summer - January, autumn - May and spring - September) in order to assess the functional attributes. LDMC was not affected by soil fertility nor by season, but SLA resulted from a significant interaction of these variables. When environmental conditions are not favorable to growth (water deficit in summer or short days and low temperatures in autumn) the increase of the level of soil fertility allows higher values of SLA. In contrast, when weather conditions are favorable, soil fertility does not affect the values of this attribute. Furthermore, the SRL is only affected by time of the year, with increased values in the spring when weather conditions are more favorable. Although there is a significant correlation between SLA and SRL only half the variability of an attribute is explained by the variability of the other (p=0,0083). The greater variability of fertility in non-fertilized soils may have contributed to this relatively low correlation.en
