Autonomy, according to Piaget (1971), means being governed by itself, being the opposite of heteronomy (ruled by another person, without autonomy of themselves). With regard to autonomy within the school, Macaro (1997) says that autonomy is the ability of the learner to take responsibility for their learning, being responsible for the steps and pace of this process. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate and analyze the contribution of experimental activities for the development of students' autonomy, both inside and outside the classroom. Also aimed to relate the effects of these activities on the process of valorization of the student in their training as a social subject. At the methodological level, a qualitative research was done, supported by semi-structured questionnaire in collecting data and in technique of content analysis in interpreting the responses of the research subjects. From this, the categories of analysis that led the discussion and analysis of results were created. The search and data collection occurred through inserts in the State College of Basic Education Japan, where two classes with experiments were conducted in a class of the second year of high school, after the application of the questionnaire. The discussion of results and its analysis, showed that the investigated students prefer, and want more, Biology classes with experiments, debates, videos and other teaching methods that motivate them to ask questions, expressing doubts, to formulate hypotheses and to exchange their experiences with their classmates and teachers. Or rather, different classes of which they use to have and that are based only on historical artifacts school: blackboard and chalk. Lessons with experiments or with other ways to teach biology, with an emphasis on active participation of the class, and not just the teacher, allow the student to act in their own learning process, being responsible for its own education. It was concluded that classes with experiments conducted in this research, representing a fraction of what could be the teaching of Biology in schools of Basic Education, can contribute significantly to the development of cognitive and social learner's autonomy, and instigate your curiosity in the search for answers about what you do not know and would like to know, and with this, build notions of belonging to the school and social contexts in which they live.en
