The increasing incorporation of women into the labor market allows them to be in positions and functions previously considered predominantly ‘masculine’, such as a career as a police offi cer, which is the focus of this study. This article investigates the relationship of gender and identity through the analysis of women’s work for the “Corregedoria-Geral da Polícia Civil de Porto Alegre – RS” (Civil Police Department). This study has a qualitative approach and data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and systematic observation. Through the technique of content analysis, we identifi ed that the policewomen do not realize the differences in performance between men and women in regard to initial training to prepare for the function, neither regarding the daily activities of work, nor the possibilities for career advancement or the relationship between colleagues. The perception of most policemen interviewed proved, however, opposed to the perception of policewomen in almost all the issues raised. With regard to identity, it is emphasized that the function has some peculiarities that contribute to the building of the identity of a police offi cer, such as a feeling of protection among colleagues and the feeling of belonging to a class of workers with an important role in society.en
