Abstract
The present work shows a numerical study of laminar flow inside C-shaped lid-driven square cavity under natural convection effect. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible and permanent. The objective is to obtain the optimum geometry of the fin in order to maximize heat transfer between the fluid flowing inside the heated cavity and the flap inserted in the cavity at three positions: in the center, and a fourth and one-sixth of the lower region of the cavity. To this the ratio of the external dimensions of the cavity is fixed and varying the fin aspect ratio, ie the ratio between height and length of the fin for optimal heat transfer in each position. The area of the fin exhibit 5% of the total area of the cavity and this value is kept fixed. The fluid flowing in the interior of the cavity has the thermophysical properties of air for Pr = 0.71. The buoyancy forces encountered in the flow are performed through the use of the Rayleigh number, . In order to solve the proposed problem, the commercial software Fluent® based on finite volume method was used to solve mass, momentum and energy equations, coupling the pressure and velocity by the use of the SIMPLEC method and the spatial discretization, using first order upwind scheme. The results show the optimized geometry for each position of the fin. The best geometry for the central position is the one which uses the aspect ratio equal to 1.2. This geometry increases 18.09% the heat transfer rate between the fin and the fluid when compared to heat transfer rate calculated for the other fin positions. This shows the importance of the geometry when maximizing natural convection heat transfer between the fin and the cavity fluid for the cases analyzed. ...
