Solar radiation, rainfall, wind, air temperature, and air humidity have a great influence on the development and yield of grapevines. In a micro scale level these elements can be modified by using plastic covering on vineyards, allowing to improvements of production and quality of grapes. The objective of this study was to quantify microclimatic alterations caused by the plastic covering, as well as to evaluate its effects on the plant development and production of grapevines cv. Niágara Rosada. A field experiment was carried out in a three-year old vineyard, in Bento Gonçalves, RS, during the 2007/08 growing season. Five rows of plants were grown under a transparent plastic film (160 µm) in discontinuous arcs. The rest of the vineyard was kept in open sky, as control. In both the environments the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), air temperature and humidity, and wind velocity were monitored. The efficiency of PAR interception, degree-days accumulation, and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) were estimated. The crop phenology and leaf area index (LAI), the weight, diameter, sugar concentration and acidity in grapes, as well as the incidence of fungal diseases and fruit yields were determined. The plastic covering reduced in 34% the incident PAR on the canopy, but increased the air temperature, in particular the maximum daily temperature (+3.1°C). It reduced the wind velocity in 93% in comparison to open air. During the day, the air relative humidity was reduced, while the water vapor pressure and the vapor pressure deficit were increased under the covering. ETo in the covered environment was 89% of ETo in open air. The mean efficiency of PAR interception was 0.59 and 0.56 for the uncovered and covered vineyards, respectively. Maximum efficiencies rose to 0.79 and 0.75 at beginning of grape maturation, with maximum LAI (2.1 and 2.5). The coverage has accelerated the plant development until the fruit maturation, but delayed the senescence of leaves. It has also promoted increments of LAI and leaf area duration, and prevented the incidence of fungal diseases on the covered vineyard. The grape yields were 12.3 and 27.1 t ha-¹ in the uncovered and covered vineyards, respectively. Therefore, the use of plastic covering over vineyards seems to be an important alternative practice for producing table grapes in organic cultivation systems, in the Serra Gaúcha region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.en
