Wind energy has become one of the most widely used alternative energy sources in recent years due to its clean and renewable character. In this context of increasing demand for new facilities, a determining factor for the success of the project is the cost involved in each wind generator that composes the wind park. One method of making the project economically viable is to reduce the weight of the tower of the wind generator, and consequently the total cost of the material involved in the construction. The objective of this work is the development of a methodology to minimize the weight of a tower of a wind generator subjected to wind action, dead weight and weight of the rotor / nacelle assembly. Use is made of the NBR 6123, NBR 8681 and NBR 8800 standards, regarding the behaviour of the wind and safety criteria for steel structures, respectively. The optimization is performed by the use of the metaheuristic algorithm QPSO, implemented in MATLAB, 2002, software. The problem studied consists of a tubular tower, whose design variables are their thickness and external diameter. The restrictions used refer to aspects of resistance and standardized displacements. The wind load on the tower is analysed as an equivalent static force and the force transmitted by the rotor / nacelle assembly to the tower is considered by a simplified model. Substantial improvements in the total mass of the tower are obtained using the QPSO algorithm. The developed methodology is tested for their robustness by multiple restarts. All the optimized solutions meet the constraint criteria established in the respective standards for buckling, and a combination of loads by through interaction curves for compression, bending moment, shear stress and torsion.en
