Based on the acknowledgment practices identified in scientific papers, this study investigates the 2009-2016 Brazilian publications indexed by the Web of Science (WoS), observing characteristics of the funded research (financial acknowledgment) and "hidden" collaboration (non-financial acknowledgments) in Brazilian science. All papers that contain at least one Brazilian address in the Author Address field were part of the study. The data were organized and analyzed with the help of Bibexcel, SPSS version 18.0, Pajek and Excel 2007 software. In addition, it was conducted a qualitative analysis through interviews, in order to examine the behavior of Brazilian researchers regarding acknowledgments. The funded research characteristics analysis is based on a corpus of 268,779 papers, where 71.4% include information on Funding Acknowledgments (FA). The indicators revealed that the presence of funding acknowledgments varies according to the area. The bigger presence of FA observed in Biomedicine, Physics and Chemistry (˃80%), in comparison to Social Sciences and Humanities (≤40%), indicates a higher dependence of funding in the experimental areas. The Agriculture, Biology and Environment area registered the highest number of papers derived from funding, evidencing the concentration of resources and the government effort on investing in the "bio-environmental" research model. In general, the prevalence of FA is clearly noticeable in papers published in Q1 journals, and it can be interpreted as a quality indicator of funded research. The results indicate a lower presence of FA in papers with low number of authors. In the papers of multiple authorship (teamwork), the presence of FA is higher, suggesting a strong relation between funding and collaboration. The predominance of FA in cited papers reflects the greater impact of funded research, statistically revealing the association between funding and citations. The "hidden" collaboration characteristics analysis is based on a sub-corpus with 5,005 papers, of which 61.2% contain acknowledgment texts. The indicators show that sub-authorship patterns vary according to the WoS discipline/area. The higher presence of PIC - Peer Interactive Communication - acknowledgments in Economics and Mathematics, Interdisciplinary Applications reflects the role of intellectual and/or conceptual contributions within invisible colleges in disciplines with applied social orientation. The supremacy of technical/instrumental acknowledgments in Horticulture and Hematology proves the importance of experts support in the research of disciplines with technical and experimental orientation. The motivational variants identified in the acknowledgment behavior of Brazilian researchers are determined by institutional requirements (financial acknowledgment) and by specific habits (non-financial acknowledgments) of the communities in each area and discipline, depending on the type of need required to embody the investigation, the nature of the research (applied social/technical and instrumental), the structure and dynamics of the scientific activity (complexity of human interactions) and others.en
