Avena sativa L. (white oat) is one of the small grain cereals produced in the Rio Grande do Sul state with the greatest range of uses in agriculture. Weeds are among the main constraints to high grain yield on the oat crop. In the world there are few herbicides registered for weed control in this crop. The objectives of this study were: to characterize the tolerance to iodosulfuron-methyl herbicide in oat genotypes used in the Oats Breeding Program from UFRGS; to evaluate the tolerance of oat plants to different chemical groups of enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides; to identify the environmental conditions that promote the selectivity of the herbicide to the crop; and to elucidate the mechanism of tolerance to the product on oat plants. The characterization of iodosulfuronmethyl tolerance in 20 oat genotypes, under greenhouse conditions, have indicated reduced sensitivity to the herbicide in the genotypes UFRGS 14, URS Guará, URS Guapa and UFRGS 017004-2, up to 10 g ha-1 of iodosulfuron-methyl. Field experiment conducted in 2013 have demonstrated that iodosulfuron-methyl, at 5 g ha-1 , affected the oat grain yield on the genotypes URS Guará and URS Guria, but did not affect it on the genotype UFRGS 14. In contrast, in 2014, the oat grain yield of five genotypes, including URS Guará, URS Guria and UFRGS 14, have been reduced by iodosulfuron-methyl even at only 2.5 g ha-1 . The impact of the environmental conditions on iodosulfuron-methyl selectivity to the oat crop was independent on the herbicide spray time (10:00, 13:00 and 16:00h) or of genotypes (URS Guara and URS Guria). In a greenhouse experiment, the iodosulfuronmethyl rate to promote 50% of injury to oat plants increased proportionally to the air temperature (between 10 and 32 ° C) during the week after application. Experiments conducted in the greenhouse indicated no cross-tolerance to imazethapyr, nicosulfuron e bispyribac-sodium on plants of the genotype UFRGS 14, URS Guará, URS Guria and UFRGS 18, but they were less sensitive to penoxsulam. The activity of the ALS enzyme, extracted from oat plants, was sensitive to iodosulfuron-methyl. The increment of the herbicide effect on oat plants treated with inhibitors of the detoxification enzymes (malathion + chlorpyrifos), or the increment of the herbicide efficacy in plants sprayed with the stimulator of detoxification (mefenpyr-diethyl), suggest that iodosulfuron-methyl degradation is the mechanism involved on its selectivity on oat plants.en
