Flowering time is a complex trait due to the action of several metabolic pathways and to the high genotype x environment interaction. The genetic mechanisms involved in the control of flowering time have not yet been fully elucidated in hexaploid oat. The objectives of this study were to evaluate flowering time in three segregating oat populations developed by artificial crosses between contrasting parents for the trait, to determine the number of genes involved with the flowering time control in three segregating oat populations in the F2 and F2:3 generations and to estimate the the broad and narrow sense heritabilty in three segregating oat populations. The F2 populations derived from the crosses ‘UFRGS 8 x UFRGS 078030-2’, ‘URS Taura x Leggett’ and ‘FL0206B-S-B-S1 x UFRGS 078030-1’ were evaluated in 2015. In 2016, F2:3 families originated from F2 individuals of these populations were evaluated. Based on the results obtained in F2 generation, genetic hypotheses controlling flowering time in these populations were tested. The same hypotheses were also tested for the segregation adjustment observed in F2:3 families. Heritability in the broad sense and in narrow sense by the parent-progeny regression method was estimated for all three populations. Phenotypic variation for the flowering time trait was observed among populations and the results were consistent in 2015 and 2016. The two, three and four genes hypothesis involved in the control of flowering time was the one that best fit the obtained results for the population ‘UFRGS 8 x UFRGS 078030-2’, ‘URS Taura x Leggett’ and ‘FL0206B-S-B-S1 x UFRGS 078030-1’, respectively, in F2 generation. However, these genetic hiphoteses did not show a perfect adjustment in F2:3 families. Broad sense heritability of was 0.75, 0.58 and 0.49 was estimated for ‘UFRGS 8 x UFRGS 078030-2’, ‘URS Taura x Leggett’ and ‘FL0206B-S-B-S1 x UFRGS 078030-1’, respectively. Narrow sense heritability of 0.53, 0.50 and 0.45 was estimated for the three populations, respectively. Studies in molecular level may confirm those hiphoteses genetics. Future studies applying modern tools of molecular genetics will be essential to validate the results of this study and will allow advancing the knowledge about the genetic control of the flowering time trait in hexaploid oat.en
