The characterization of the coastal barrier system of Hermenegildo, by data obtained trough SPT drilling and GPR allowed the establishment of the stratigraphic relationships between the lithological units of the coastal depositional environments of Hermenegildo, as well as the identification of their geometries. Organic horizons and shells were dated by 14C, allowing the chronological positioning of the stratigraphic units. Not only geological aspects were analysed, but also climatic and ecological aspects that have influenced the environmental evolution of the study region at the end of the Pleistocene and during the Holocene. The stratigraphic record is formed by two major units: i) a retrogradational (transgressive) Holocene unit; overlying the ii) Pleistocene substrate. These units are limited by an erosional surface related to the sea level low stand of the last glaciation. Based on sedimentary structures, sedimentology, 14C dating, palinology, analysis of diatoms and mollusks it was possible to distinguish seven sedimentary facies: Facies L3 (estuarine/lagoonal), Facies B3 (shallow marine/estuarine), Facies TA4 (fresh water marsh), Facies L4 (estuarine/lagoonal), Facies ML4 (lagoonal margin), Facies T4 (salt marsh) and Facies B4 (aeolian). The Pleistocene unit (facies L3 and B3) indicates the existence of a barrier/lagoon system in the present region of Hermenegildo beach at the time of the penultimate transgression. The stratigraphy of the Holocene unit clearly indicates its retrogradational (transgressive) nature, as a product of the landward migration of a barrier/lagoon system. The biostratigraphic record of the Holocene unit shows a maximum marine influence in the lagoonal system (facies L4) around 6,800 cal yrs BP, intercalating periods of typical lacustrine deposition in the backbarrier area (facies TA4 and T4). The emerged part of the barrier corresponds to the aeolian facies (B4), which by transgressing into the lagoonal depression formed facies ML4, under the lagoonal margin dynamics. The stratigraphic aspects of this coastal sector converge into a diagnostic of a transgressive trend of sea level operating in this sector in the last 6,800 cal yrs BP.en
