This dissertation explores the phenomenon of slumization in medium-sized agribusiness cities in Brazil as a process linked to the modernization of the relationship between the city and the countryside. If previously favelas were theoretically linked exclusively to large cities and metropolises along the Brazilian coast, from the middle of the twentieth century on this urban phenomenon started to appear in other types of cities, especially médium cities. This process links the urbanization of territories in the interior of the country to the modernization of agriculture to meet the demands of the agribusiness production system that modernized the city-countryside relationship. The modernization of agriculture promoted the mechanization of rural activities, yet it also generated the segmentation of agricultural activities, transferring the stage of crop processing to urban spaces, which became industrialized, forming agro-industrial complexes and creating new urban agricultural branches: of input production and services. Rural jobs were depleted as well as the urban agricultural jobs progressively demanded high specialization levels. When the agro-industrial complexes were formed in these medium cities, they started to play a polarizing role in relation to neighboring municipalities due to the concentration of financial resources, job possibilities, access to trade and services they provided. This polarization drove the uneven growth of the city, which, urbanized and modernized, became slums. Focusing on a non-metropolitan urban area, the aim of this dissertation is to analyze the factors that are related to the phenomenon of slumization in medium agribusiness cities, as well as the internal dynamics of favelas in urban spaces spatially and culturally close to the rural world. This work also seeks to contribute to the construction of knowledge about Brazilian slums in their multiplicity, exploring distinct arrays of slums in their spatial, social and cultural characteristics. The research method includes literature review, survey and manipulation of statistical data, besides production of urban cartography, case-study based on fieldwork and ethnographic writing. The fieldwork analyzes the territorial transformations of two favelas in the pioneer center of soybean production in Brazil, Passo Fundo (RS), in relation to the socio-spatial trajectories of the populations that inhabit these spaces and that have a territorial incidence on a discussion based on the social memory of their inhabitants. The favelas, Záchia and Popular, are related to the policies of de-slumming and regularization of favelas in the city in the 1980s. In the late 2010s, what is noticeable is the consolidation of old favelas and the refaveling of spaces adjacent to regularized popular territories in a dispute over urban land that is linked to peasant expropriations of rural lands for the cultivation of export monocultures in the globalized market.en
