Cinema. Imagem. Ohar.pt_BR
The subject of this thesis is the relationship and meanings constructed between the visual experience of the deaf child and the image — specifically the cinematographic image. The aim of this investigation is to characterize the ways in which deaf children relate to images and what they have to say about these images, through a unique experience of looking at them. To this end, it was first necessary to build the concept of childhood deafness in order to be able to think about the possible relations between deaf children and image. To conceive this discussion and streamline it theoretically, methodologically and analytically, three inseparable categories were created, namely: the deaf child as the subject of the gaze; the deaf child as the subject of the enunciation; the deaf child as the subject of ethics. These three categories derive from theoretical and methodological assumptions of the research connected to the relation between elements involving the production of the subject (of their gaze, language and ethics), considering the chosen theoretical framework from Foucault and Didi-Huberman. These derive, also, from a gathering of researches carried out in recent years in the field that links deafness and childhood and from discussions produced by the Sociology of Childhood. The research was carried out with a group of deaf children aged eight to twelve, in a school for the deaf in the city of Pelotas – RS. The workshops were held in 2017 and 2018, totaling 11 meetings. The aim of these workshops was to make it possible for the deaf children to have contact with different images at each meeting, allowing them to relate and interact with each other, bringing some of their experience with the images. Analytically, the workshops with children showed that: 1) the body of the deaf child is taken as an extension of their gaze in relation to the image, triggering a performance action that takes the gaze and the body to signify the image. It is also noteworthy that the child’s gaze comprises a relationship between the understanding and the child, in the sense that watching a film contemplates other configurations of what, in fact, is called understanding a film; 2) from the concept of image developed by Didi-Huberman, it is understood that, for the establishment of a dialogue with the image, sometimes the child needs the company of the other, being the film partner, the researcher, the teacher or themselves as another; 3) the relationship with the image (understood and configured as another, based on the discussions that Foucault established about the figure of the other) needs a detachment from the deaf child’s gaze and thinking, viewing the question and the movement. This detachment, therefore, allowed an ethical relation with the image, based on the position that Didi-Huberman explains, leading children to a different relationship with the image. Such elements discussed in the text characterize singularities related to deaf childhood with regard to their ways of seeing.en
