This research sought to understand the symbolic universe that permeates the different uses of the bicycle, in contemporary times, for the members of the pedal groups, from the city of Porto Alegre, through the theoretical assumptions of Anthony Giddens. It sought to understand the extent to which the use of bicycles affects the construction of identities, lifestyles, self realization and acts as a means of positioning itself before the new postmodern social-political environmental configurations. Qualitative methods and techniques were used, based on participant observation, in-depth interviews and thematic text analysis. As results, it was identified that being a cyclist is part of the individual and collective identity of the interviewees and a routine practice always open to change from the reflexivity of the individual; the different uses of the bicycle are configured in lifestyles and the relationship between the individual and its use is configured in self-realization; the use of bicycles is related to political-social environmental positions and significant differences between the groups were identified.en
