Positive word-of-mouth communication is performed daily by individuals. From an early age we are programmed to speak, and, on a daily, we receive recommendations from family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, even strangers, that are as diverse as of a supermarket with the lowest price, to the new restaurant that has opened in the city with an excellent service. As this recommendation usually comes from people from a social circle, where usually there is trust, the tendency to follow them increases, since it is believed that the source does not have any type of relationship with the company. The economic market of bars and restaurants is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country, but according to the president of Abrasel-RS, businessmen have increasing difficulties to maintain, retain and attract new customers. Linked to this, there is the considerable increase in the costs of inputs and the impacts caused by the pandemic of COVID-19. Thus, the present work aims to examine the level of influence of positive word of mouth communication, in the choosing process made by the individual in relation to which bar or restaurant to attend. Considering this, the research was organized in two stages: the first with an exploratory qualitative approach, through in-depth interviews, where nine (9) interviews were carried out, and the second with a quantitative descriptive approach via the application of an online questionnaire, which had 413 respondents. With the results, it stands out: the attributes "protective measures against COVID-19", "price" and "menu (variety)", were the most valued attributes related to bars and restaurants by the interviewees. It was identified that the sources of the recommendations had a close relationship to the interviewees. The study also showed that the average expertise/knowledge of the source was higher on individuals who followed the recommendation in relation to those who did not. Regarding the way of receiving the recommendation, it was identified that individuals who received the recommendations by “request”, are more likely to follow them. Finally, with the analysis of variance, ANOVA, differences of perception were identified in some variables such as age range, gender and income range.en
