The requirement for nutrients by pigs is a dynamic mechanism of the organism, where requirements change quickly and vary between animals. This variability affects the interpretation of the population's responses and the efficiency of use of the amino acids ingested above the requirement of maintenance for protein deposition. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the changes in nitrogen (N) retention of individual pigs in the growth phase due to the gradual increase in nutrient consumption. For this, three trials (2 of N balance and 1 of apparent metabolizability of N and energy) with pigs in the growth phase were conducted. The N balance tests were conducted to evaluate the response in N retention in function of the increase in the consumption of digestible lysine (g/d) in individual pigs (test 1) and pigs in group (test 2). The metabolizability test was performed to assess the impact of increased metabolizable energy consumption (Mcal/d), from very low levels to excessive levels, on N retention in individual pigs. The demand for lysine and the efficiency of use of this amino acid varied between individual pigs and the group requirement was 13% higher than the average of individual pigs (p<0.01). However, the maximum lysine retention response (g/d) for the average of the individual pigs and the group was similar (p>0.05). The increase in metabolizable energy consumption (Mcal/d) also showed a difference in N retention curves for individual pigs (p<0.01), with the group showing a cubic response for this variable. From the observation of the responses of individual pigs to the consumption of different nutrients, we can consider that the individual adjustment of nutritional requirements is necessary to maximize the response of pigs by improving their performance and decreasing the excretion of nutrients, which contributes to economic and sustainable production of pigs. ...
