A imposição da maternidade como violência em “the joys of motherhood”, de Buchi Emecheta

Abstract

Este trabalho tem como escopo o estudo da obra The Joys of Motherhood, escrito pela autora nigeriana Buchi Emecheta, no que diz respeito à temática da maternidade compulsória. A partir do entendimento de que a violência não precisa ser física para ser sentida e que a violência simbólica perpassa a esfera psicológica, adentrando na materialidade do corpo e das relações sociais, a dissertação explora a narrativa da vida da protagonista Nnu Ego e sua busca da felicidade e da completude enquanto mulher por meio da maternidade. Para tanto, inicialmente são expostos conceitos preliminares que orientam o estudo do corpus. Assim, o trabalho é localizado no campo chamado Direito e Literatura, tendo em vista que propõe um diálogo entre os estudos literários e as ciências jurídicas. Em seguida, são explorados os conceitos “violência”, “poder”, “ideologia”, “hegemonia”, bem como a produção teórica acerca da constituição do gênero feminino. Na segunda parte da dissertação, a narrativa da obra é trabalhada, levantando a discussão acerca da textualidade do corpo feminino, das tradições culturais e religiosas presentes no enredo e suas consequências nas reflexões e ações de Nnu Ego a partir do relato de uma narradora posicionada dentro da experiência feminina.

This work has as its scope the study of The Joys of Motherhood, written by the Nigerian author Buchi Emecheta, regarding the theme of compulsory motherhood. Based on the understanding that violence does not need to be physical to be felt and that symbolic violence transcends the psychological sphere, entering the materiality of the body and of social relations, the thesis explores the narrative of protagonist Nnu Ego's life and her search for happiness and completeness as a woman through motherhood. To do so, initially, preliminary concepts that guide the study of the corpus are exposed. Thus, the work is localized in the field called Law and Literature, considering that it proposes a dialogue between literary studies and legal sciences. Then, the concepts “violence”, “power”, “ideology”, “hegemony” are explored, as well as the theoretical production about the constitution of the female gender. In the second part of the thesis, the study of narrative of the novel is developed, raising the discussion about the textuality of the female body, the cultural and religious traditions present in the plot and its consequences in the reflections and actions of Nnu Ego from the account of a narrator positioned within of the female experience.
