As new species are postulated and some are inserted in templates already defined of aquatic species production, studies of embryonic and larval development are necessary to increase survival rates in laboratory breeding. Neotropical fish species for aquaculture are widely studied, to characterize the embryonic and larval development, identify and locate spawning areas, know the critical points of development and the exact time of first feeding. This study aimed to analyze the different stages of embryonic and larval development of the parental Leiarius marmoratus and the hybrid Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum x Leiarius marmoratus. The hybrid, originated from the interespecific cross, presents insertion in the production chain in the North and Midwest of Brazil. Therefore, to understand the development of these processes adds knowledge to the species as the hybrid relative to its ontogeny. From the collection of material in fish reproduction laboratory, embryos were used to make photomicrographs of embryonic development and tissue for histological analysis. The results revealed the initial ontogenetic development of both species, similar to what occurs in teleosts, with the cleavage stadium showing asynchrony in the division of blastomeres, the early formation of the yolk syncytial layer in the morula stage, gastrula with vitelline ring formation and embryonic shell formation, mouth opening of the larva at 36 and 48 hours for species and hybrid, respectively, and food acquisition by exogenous food by the hybrid at 72 hours after hatching. There was a greater perivitelline space and the acquisition of exogenous food by larvae of the hybrid compared to the larvae of the parental L. marmoratus. Failure to capture exogenous food by L. marmoratus may be due to the small size of the oral apparatus in relation to the exogenous food offered. So it is possible to suggest the need for an adequate supply during the larval period of the species, in addition to meeting specific care as monitor the flow of the incubator (3 liter per minute) during incubation, and reducing stocking density of embryos, in order to avoid mechanical shocks therebetween, cause they present reduced perivitelline distance, which determines the fragility of the embryo L. marmoratus.en
